Peoplecare Health
Insurance is a Not for Profit private health
insurer that is owned, operated and managed by members.
Lysaght Peoplecare
was formed in 1953 by a dedicated group of John Lysaght Australia
employees (later BHP, now BlueScope Steel)
who believed that
they should assist one another to provide protection against
unforseen health costs. We are extremely proud of the
fact
that we have provided comprehensive health benefits to BHP
/ BlueScope Steel employees and their families for over 50 years,
and are well focused and financially positioned to continue
to provide these comprehensive benefits for many years to
come.
In 2006, the fund
changed its registration status from a restricted membership
fund to open, making membership available to any
Australian
resident. At this time, the fund brand name also changed to
Peoplecare Health Insurance.
Key Statistics
- We have over 18,500 contributors, covering over 40,000
people Australia wide.
- In the 2008 calendar year we paid a total of $39 million
benefits direct to our
members in the form of Hospital,
Medical and Ancillary (Dental, Optical, Physiotherapy, etc)
benefits at an average of $2,269 per membership.

agreements with more than 500 private hospitals / day surgeries
and “Access Gap” arrangements with more than 11,000
doctors (excluding the BHP Health Plan).
- No hospital coverage exclusions.
- 1/2 the excess is waived on all day surgery visits (Public and Private) - approximately 60% of hospital
visits are in a day surgery.
- HICAPS (electronic claiming - swipe card) and Fax Claiming
services that makes claiming very convenient for most ancillary
health services.

- Continuity of coverage for ever - no need to leave us if you
cease employment with BHP or any associated company.
- Children covered to age 21 years (or full time students to 25
years) as a dependent on a family membership, after which time
they are then entitled to maintain their own membership with us.
